The Justification of Misogyny – a Time-Honored Tradition in Patriarchy

It is always curious how various philosophies have been used to justify misogyny.  Biological determinism has long been used by the right wing to justify sexist policies and institutions by claiming that men and women are different based on their biology and their supposedly different brains, therefore stereotypical sex roles are natural and predetermined and are beyond the reach of culture and social conditioning.

These days we have dialectical idealism on the Left being used to justify sexist, regressive, revisionist thinking and the rejection of feminism, especially radical feminism, and the dismissal of the reality of sex-based oppression.  In dialectical idealism, how one imagines oneself is more important than what one actually is, therefore if I think I’m a woman that is more important than if I am actually a woman.  That is, one’s idea trumps reality, and therefore it is assumed that people who think they’re women are more oppressed than actual women.

This thinking is diametrically opposed to dialectical materialism according to Marxist Zachary George Najarian-Najafi, whose brilliant article, Misogyny is Revisionism Part 1: On the Left’s “Woman” Problem  spells out the 3 insidious lies that the Left has accepted as truth, which are undermining women’s liberation and enabling the continued oppression of patriarchy.  According to Najarian-Najafi, they are:

  1. Transwomen are women.
  2. Sex work is work.
  3. Feminism is bourgeois.

His first article focuses on the first lie, his second article, Misogyny is Revisionism Part 2: The Masque of the “Red” Pimp, focuses on the second lie, and his third article in this series, Misogyny is Revisionism Part 3: In Defense of Feminism focuses on the third. We couldn’t agree more, and our response to the 3 lies is:

  1. Transwomen are men, not women.
  2. “Sex work” isn’t work, it’s slavery.
  3. Radical feminism isn’t bourgeois, it’s revolutionary.

The ways in which men manipulate the truth and attempt to turn reality on its head are myriad, but the fact remains there is objective reality, and that reality is women are still oppressed as a sex.  Regardless of the ways in which the Left or the Right try to justify or deny it, sex-based oppression exists and will continue until we end patriarchy and male supremacy.

Hobby Lobby – a Case of Corporate Rights vs. Human Rights

The Hobby Lobby ruling by the Supreme Court today is illustrative of just how urgently we need to pass the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution as well as an amendment to abolish corporate “personhood” and money as “speech.” This ruling graphically displays the need for these two constitutional amendments as it empowers corporations’ so-called “personhood” while ignoring the actual personhood of 51% (!) of the population. It demonstrates how far the current court is willing to go to enshrine corporate constitutional rights while emboldening religious fanatics and stomping on the human rights of women. It is the perfect example of religious oppression and tyranny masquerading as religious “freedom” and the corporate 1% using any excuse to minimize costs and maximize profits.

The radical religious right has infested the Supreme Court in addition to Congress in the persons of particularly Samuel Alito, who wrote the majority opinion, and Antonin Scalia, who in turn were enabled by the other right-wing male members of the court. What is unbelievable is that the anti-abortion fanatics like Hobby Lobby have now gone after birth control, revealing their hypocrisy regarding abortion given the fact that birth control prevents abortions, which is no surprise to those of us who have always known their agenda. They are not the least bit interested in “life,” caring nothing for the lives of women, only feigning angst for non-viable zygotes, gametes, and fetuses because what they are actually interested in is invading and negating women’s bodily sovereignty, privacy, autonomy, and agency so that women have no freedom or control over their lives.

The attitude of fundamentalist fanatics is not only sexist, but male supremacist; women are seen as nothing more than sexual commodities, brood mares and chattel whose bodies are property to be allocated and controlled. These Christian fascists think they have the right to dictate to women their most intimate decisions about their bodies and their sexuality, an outrageous discrimination against only females as women are the only persons who use prescription birth control or need abortions and because procedures like vasectomies for men are not excluded. Their goal of female enslavement and bondage through forced childbearing is abundantly clear.

As Ginsburg warns, this decision will be applied broadly and open the floodgates for corporations to claim all kinds of exceptions to abiding by the provisions of the Affordable Care Act, whether it be certain procedures such as pap smears, mammograms, or even denying women equal pay. If it’s ok to discriminate against women in one way, why wouldn’t it be in another? This is just the beginning in terms of lawsuits to give corporate “persons” the right to openly discriminate against real female persons, an expansion of rights for artificial entities stolen from our Bill of Rights intended for natural persons, and these kinds of rulings will continue until we pass a 28th and a 29th amendment to the Constitution to end discrimination based on sex and to end corporate personhood and money as speech.

Why I’m voting for Cindy Sheehan for Governor

I don’t know about you, but I’m voting for Cindy Sheehan for Governor. Here’s why she is getting my vote. Not only is she an outspoken anti-war/peace activist, she opposes corporate rule, is a woman (we need many more in office!), she is a third-party progressive (the only real kind, other than a few exceptions like Alan Grayson and Elizabeth Warren), and she is running on the Peace & Freedom ticket. Mr. Jerry Fracking Brown, the Democratic candidate, is certainly NOT progressive, bowing as he does to the oil industry and other corporate interests. Haven’t we had enough of the two-party corporate-owned tyranny?

Cindy writes on her website why she is running for governor: “primarily because I believe that California should be leading the nation in peace, education, health care, sustainable/renewable energy and democracy.” Secondarily, she writes that she feels the only way to halt the corporate stranglehold is by running as a third-party candidate, thereby challenging the two-party system which collaborates with and enables corporate rule. This is why I support her and the Peace & Freedom Party, which represents and fight for the rights and benefit of the 99%, not the over-privileged 1%.

P&F recognizes that capitalism is the vehicle of classism and imperialism and is inimical to democracy, and clearly states this in its platform without equivocation. Our system is in grave need of socialization, in every sense of the word, in view of the winner-take-all, mean-spirited, violent, war-obsessed plutocracy we currently have where profit rules supreme in a corrupt political landscape where money is “speech” and corporations are “people” while actual people are reduced to a commodity to be manipulated and ruled.

Remember to vote on Tuesday and remember we can now vote for any candidate of any party in California, so I hope you consider voting for Cindy Sheehan for Governor!

The California Peace and Freedom Party is the only socialist and feminist political party on the ballot in California and has the largest voter registration of any socialist party in the U. S., nearing 80,000 currently. P&F’s preamble reads, “The Peace and Freedom Party is an open, multi-tendency, movement-oriented socialist party. We are united in our common commitment to socialism, democracy, feminism and unionism and our common opposition to capitalism, imperialism, racism, sexism and elitism.” For more information, visit peaceandfreedom.org.

Power Concedes Nothing Without a Demand . . .

Frederick Douglass’ statement that, “Power concedes nothing without a demand, it never has and it never will” is very applicable to the current War on Women going on in the states and in Washington, and this statement by an abortion provider, who quotes Douglass, beautifully sums up the reasoning behind abortion on demand and without apology.
Stop Patriarchy · You know, oppressors don’t respond to polite…

The core issue is women’s human right to bodily sovereignty and to make decisions regarding their lives. The radical fundamentalist religious right behind the war on women’s bodies is fueled by the misogynist notion that women are still somehow chattel, owned by the patriarchal culture-at-large, which in turn is perpetuated and inordinately influenced by the fundamentalist Christian church.

The idea of ownership is at the heart of the oppression expressed by their virulent antagonism to women’s agency and autonomy under the hypocritical mask of opposition to abortion and now birth control. Women’s human rights, the right to privacy, and the separation of church and state are all at risk in this War on Women as the larger aim of this radical group is to turn the country into a theocracy that is not only hellbent on male supremacy, but on doing away with all rights to privacy and self-determination by imposing their narrow views on every aspect of our lives.

The Fifth World Congress on Women

Today is International Women’s Day.  While there is some progress to celebrate, women keep losing rights at an exponential rate in this country. Despite the fact that women comprise 51% of the world’s population, women remain one of the most systematically exploited, discriminated against, and abused groups.  It is high time that we called for the Fifth World Congress on Women.

If one doubts that there is a full-scale War on Women, just consider these recent news stories:

Women bear brunt of Iranian crackdown on civil liberties

It is important to note that the metastasizing assault on women’s human rights and liberties has everything to do with the takeover of our government by religious zealots who would turn our country into a theocracy. Christian fundamentalism with its long list of hated freedoms and its misogyny has been spreading virulently like a pestilence and has infiltrated all levels of our government, at the local and state level, in the courts, the legislature, and even the White House for 8 years under George W. Bush, and women are far the worse for it. This is reflected in places like Iran with the resurgence of fundamentalist Islam.

If we want to preserve what is left of our democracy and regain the ground we have lost, we must excise the cancerous religious tyranny that has been allowed to grow that continues to eat away at women’s basic human rights, liberties, autonomy, and agency by confronting and condemning all forms of domination of and violence towards women and girls everywhere and affirm women’s and girls’ right to live in a world free from misogyny and male supremacy. A woman’s sovereign right over her life and her body MUST BE RESPECTED!!!

We will work for gender parity in the form of fair and equal representation in government, an immediate end to the War on Women and ALL wars, ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment and Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), and we MUST have a 5th World Congress on Women.  Please sign the petition at:  Support a UN 5th World Conference on Women (5WCW).

“Oppressed Majority,” a Film by Eléonore Pourriat

This short film presents a scenario in which men live in a world where they are harassed and abused by women like women are harassed and abused by men, a role reversal of our sexist, patriarchal, male-supremacist society.

The topic of switching gender roles has been explored many times before in comedic form, among them “Tootsie”, “All of Me”, and very incisively in the seriocomic 90’s Ellen Barkin movie, “Switch” but this short film portrays the darker reality of what it is like to live with the daily onslaught of sexual harassment and gender inequality in a way that hits home emotionally and hopefully allows men to gain a modicum of insight and empathy into women’s experience.

No Forced Pregnancy! In Defense of Choice

The War on Women being waged in Washington and in the States is an attack on women‘s lives, bodily sovereignty, autonomy, and agency.  This year marks the 41st anniversary of Roe v. Wade and we will NOT GO BACK to the days of illegal abortions!  Women are not brood mares, incubators, or chattel and abortion is a woman’s choice, and hers alone.  We vehemently reject the incursions of the radical religious right into our bedrooms and the legislation of our bodies to fit the fundamentalist Christian worldview and we will not sit by and see our basic human rights eroded by those who would coerce us into unwanted childbearing.

“Motherhood by Choice, Not Chance,” directed by Oscar-nominated, Emmy-winning filmmaker Dorothy Fadiman, is a new film celebrating the freedom of choice ushered in by the cherished 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.  To watch this quality film, and the abortion rights trilogy, “FROM the BACK-ALLEYS to the SUPREME COURT & BEYOND” go to:

Sign the Petitions to Ratify the ERA!

We must ratify the Equal Rights Amendment in order to put a stop to the War on Women that is raging throughout the States and in Washington!  Until women have equal standing in the Constitution and are no longer second-class citizens, there will be no end to the assault on women’s rights and progress by those who would like to return women to nothing more than chattel with few opportunities or choices.

Nothing else will effectively correct this inequity.  We have waited far too long for equality under the law and the first step is to remove the deadline for the ERA and recognize Alice Paul’s service to women.
